Five Birmingham Police Officers Fired
Five police officers in Birmingham, Alabama have been fired for beating a suspect that appeared to be unconscious after he wrecked his car in a police pursuit. The attack on the suspect, Anthony Warren, was caught on a police car dashboard camera on January, 23 2008.
Warren, who has been questioned about possible drug-related activity, was driving at high speeds. At one point in the pursuit, he swerved to miss spikes in the roadway and hit an officer on foot.
Warren then turned onto an off-ramp, lost control of his vehicle and rolled into a ditch. He was thrown from the car window, after which police rush over and began to beat him.
Warren did not move throughout the entire attack which included punching and the use of billy clubs.
The footage emerged as state lawyers were preparing a case of attempted murder against Warren for the police officer he hit.
Although many do not think race was a motivator of the attack, many in Birmingham are upset.
Wendy Crew, who is representing Warren, said there was no reason to use "excessive force."
Police Chief A.C. Roper also commented on the attack by saying the officers acted in a "shameful" manner. He said his department had lost 50 years of combined service due to 10 seconds of injustice. The officers can appeal against their dismissal.
Warren pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and was given a 20-year prison sentence.

firetruck fiasco
Two firetrucks responding to a two-alarm fire at 456 Middleton St., collided at the intersection of MLK and Middleton, Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at 5:15 in the afternoon. No serious injuries resulted from the collision. The accident is under review and SAFD is investigating the cause of the collision.
